Vintage Bb soprano – second time lucky ?

Kalashen Kleartone Bb Soprano sax - circa late 1920's

I’ve been looking for a reasonably priced vintage Bb Soprano for some time, just won this Kalashens Kleartone on ebay. I’m pretty sure it’s a Conn stencil, identical – except for the pitch – to my Conn PanAmerican C-Sop, but won’t know for sure until it’s in my hands.. Sometime early in February – fingers, and just about everything else, crossed.

Seller sounds a bit severe in the listing, but we’ve exchanged a load of emails and he seems a good guy – as Lewis remarked ” …and I like the sound of the seller…he refuses to sell to a whole country if one of it’s inhabitants upsets him! Treat him well & perhaps you will become the only person in the world to whom he will sell a sax!” Hmmm, there’s a thought….

Had a minor heart attack when I realised the sax was coming from North Carolina – in fact only 75 miles away from that double-dealer ( musicmakernc ) who wouldn’t ship the other Soprano to me. So, happy days when the USPS and Parcelforce tracking both told me “Your item was accepted at 4:36 PM on January 29, 2008 in PINEHURST, NC 28374.” It’s on it’s way !!

I was about to ask why people don’t want to use paypal, and then read his auction! Looks like a decent sax Alan, good luck.

Whilst I’m waiting for the soprano sax to emerge from the black hole between New Jersey and Coventry, here’s some info and pics about Kalashen – apparently the name of a dealer/store in New York City ( 14 Cooper Square ) from the late 1800’s up to the start of WWII.

They seemed to call most of their instruments (Conn and Buscher stencils, from the one’s I’ve seen) either Kleartone or Klassic – I guess to match with the ‘K’ from Kalashen. Comes as no surprise then, that they called their C-melody ” The Yankee “….

Thanks to ebay selllers elvenridge and etn for their images (or cuttings from…) and antiqueman302 for the date info.

Quick update – the soprano sax is in this country and in the hands of our ParcelForce delivery network – so it’s literally ‘home and dry’ – plus passed thro’ Customs unscathed… (no charges…) There have been Customs delays this last week, so things are taking longer – too many ebay buyers taking advantage of the dollar rate, I guess!

    Should arrive Mon/Tues………
